To lead on the back-end design and development of Human Appeal’s website using Umbraco (version 7).

During humanitarian crises, providing food, medical aid and emergency 
shelter in the immediate short term is essential to saving lives. In the long term, a multidimensional aid approach can be critical to securing a more permanent recovery. Establishing stable healthcare, education, and livelihood support programmes paves the way for empowered, self-sufficient communities. At Human Appeal, we balance our work between emergency relief and long-term development based on the changing needs of each community.

·       Lead the development process and collaborate with members of the Communications and Systems and Development Teams and front-end developers / third party agencies to make decisions in relation to technology choices, design considerations, and strategy implementation.

·       Design and plan technical solutions to meet business requirements, including developing features for new and existing applications.

·       Working with the Communication and Systems and Development Teams to satisfy user experience/interface, design and quality assurance project needs.

·       Lead and collaborate on key website digital projects, including new builds, platforms migrations, conversion rate optimisation (CRO) and maintenance support across a number of digital platforms, with a focus on providing an integrated solution.

·       Writing high quality back-end clean code following solid principles and project standards in an attempt to deliver the desired functionality and optimise the applications for maximum speed and scalability.

·       Create and embed robust best practice development techniques, including building reusable code and libraries for future use.

·       Conduct unit tests and code reviews to assess and improve site performance, maintaining design and code documentation.

·       Provide training and workshops for key stakeholders as required.

·       To lead and input from a back-end viewpoint into stakeholder meetings as required.

·       Participation in technical scoping sessions.

·       Gather and address technical and design requirements.

·       Writing clear and concise documentation – functional specifications.

·       Bringing new ideas and technologies to the team.

·       Design and implementation of web based tools to automate a variety of business processes.

·       Implementation of enhancements to the company website (built on Umbraco) as part of our ongoing evolutionary website development approach.

·       Designing and validating the technical suitability of proposed solutions including database design and software approaches proposed by stakeholders and third party agencies.

·       Taking on complex business change projects that involve multiple stakeholders and suppliers.

·       Ensure that non-functional requirements are considered including performance and accessibility considerations.

·       Take responsibility for the upkeep and maintenance of existing applications (the Human Appeal website).

·       Integrate user-facing elements developed by a front-end developer with server side logic.

·       Research, design and implement performance, SEO, security, data protection and data storage solutions.

·       Develop ideas for new programs, products, or features by monitoring industry developments and trends.

·       Participate in the entire website lifecycle, coding and debugging.

·       Manage cutting-edge technologies to improve applications.

·       Liaise with developers, designers and system administrators to identify new features.

Engage in continued professional development and research to remain current on best practices, learn new programming languages, and better assist other team members

Candidate Requirements:

Degree in computer programming/sciences or similar discipline

·       Previous experience of developing solutions on the Umbraco platform, including build and maintenance using Umbraco CMS.

·       Experienced in back-end technologies - C#, ASP.NET MVC and Web API – at least 5 years’ experience.

·       Have a strong full stack knowledge on both the front-end (HTML/CSS and JS) as well as the back-end.

·       Experience in designing and building technical solutions to complex business problems.

·       Experience of refactoring and optimization of code for performance, maintainability and extensibility.

·       Full stack development experience.

·       Experience in implementing business process automation.

·       Experience of structured testing and quality assurance approaches (e.g. test driven development and behaviour driven development). 

·       Experience and track record in delivering projects involving in-house resources and/ or third party suppliers.

·       Have worked with all parts of Umbraco, you’ll know your routing from your custom property editors, content finders and URL providers

·       Experience implementing responsive web templates into Umbraco.

Ideally you will have a background in web development who is familiar with the full lifecycle of a web project, from technical planning to front-end and back-end development.
