4 Simple Reasons We Love Merchello for eCommerce

Merchello, an eCommerce platform available through Umbraco, is one of our favourite tools for creating seamless online stores for our clients. There are a few reasons it’s our go-to eCommerce platform — including its high-performance and open-source capabilities. Plus there’s the ability for users to customise their store and integrate features such as chosen shipping providers, customer order invoicing, and to work in multiple languages/currencies.

Here are four reasons we love using Merchello for eCommerce.

The customisation possibilities

The first thing to mention is that Merchello is an open-source and community-driven product, where developers and designers can tweak their store almost as they please. This is fantastic for the technology wizards amongst us. Imagine: you’ve got a vision for your store but you just can’t manage it with your existing eCommerce product.

Step in Merchello with its responsive design features. From creating agile stores that encourage potential customers to part with their hard-earned cash, to easily optimising your user interface; by quickly adding Merchello to your website — which you can do easily as explained in the next point — you’ll be well on the way to offering your website’s visitors the user experience they’re looking for.

More importantly, it’ll be what your customers want, which is vital in the fast-moving world of online shopping.

Ease of installation

This point is quite simple. Forget lengthy and complicated installation times. Who has time for that? Merchello is straightforward to install. Even better, however, is the release of Merchello V.2.1.0.

Its FastTrack package provides users with a swift way to install Merchello without navigating tricky controls. You’ll need Merchello installed first but once you’ve done that, download FastTrack (or start fresh with the Starter Kit if you’re new to eCommerce and want to build a small store), and you’ll be minutes away from adding the products and content nodes you require. Pretty cool if you ask us!

High performance

Not only is Merchello pleasing to the eye, meaning it won’t give you a headache when you spend hours customising your stores, the high performance capabilities will leave you with a smile on your face.

Other Umbraco eCommerce integration options include Tea Commerce, uWebshop and uCommerce, but Merchello is our choice based on performance alone. Not to mention that it’s the least Euro or US-centric option of the four, perfect for you Aussie webmasters.

There’s much more

As an extension of Umbraco, you don’t lose any of those all-important eCommerce SEO benefits. Users can customise product URL structures and even customise them depending on their preferred language.

Other benefits include clear and concise reporting data with customisation options when clients need specific information. Finally, this is one of our favourite features: Merchello’s self-described ‘very powerful marketing section’. We agree. You can offer customers discounts and sales, ideal for encouraging people to click ‘buy’. After all, that’s what eCommerce is all about, right?

Who should use Merchello?

In conclusion, Merchello is an ideal platform for agencies using Umbraco for eCommerce. We’re also keen on the FastTrack starter kit for beginners — because you have to start somewhere. If that’s you, we’d seriously consider taking a look at this product and seeing how it helps to boost both your performance and sales.

We’ve compared Merchello with Tea Commerce to help you choose the best one for you — read our comparison post here.

Hey Peeps,

I'm an entrepreneur and web developer with a passion for coding. I absolutely love working with Umbraco CMS and appreciate the Umbraco community even more.

I've got 10 years+ .Net experience and 7 years+ experience working in the recruitment industry, both coding and marketing job websites. I wanted to use my skills to help give something back to this awesome community and so I decided to build UmbraJobs.com.

My vision & fundamentals

I want this website to be a place where Umbraco Professionals and Umbraco Partners can advertise their services but at the same time I want to filter out all the under-qualified freelancers & agencies that take up the biggest part of other job & freelancer websites. We've all worked hard to gain our Umbraco certifications, partnership status, and help build the Umbraco community to what it is today. I want to see everyone get rewarded for their efforts.
