Umbraco Headless

The inflexibility of traditional CMS tools is no longer compatible with the complexities of mobile and IoT integration. Rather than losing their minds, more developers are choosing to go Headless.

What is Umbraco Headless CMS?

Umbraco Headless CMS was born of business’ needs to provide personalised content across multiple platforms. It enables centralised content management across all channels and gives developers much more room for innovation.

Unlike traditional models which have a backend and frontend that use the same code base and communicate directly with each other, Umbraco Headless CMS separates the two. The presentation layer has been completely removed and this solution focuses on back-end only--hence the name.

Headless CMS provides an administrative interface and collaboration platform for content creators, as well as handling content workflows and classification. It stores and delivers content directly via an API or web service that is capable of pushing content straight to any smart device.

As the content storage and presentation layer are handled by separate software--and can even be installed on separate servers--the typical dependency between them is removed. This “independence” allows a developer to provide content as a service, or “CaaS.”

This next generation CMS creates a more engaging user experience and can be used in a wide variety of projects, including but not limited to websites, chatbots, and apps. It is a new way of providing a data source for your site using the back-office tools you already know while making it easy to utilise the data in any of your projects.

What are the Benefits of Umbraco Headless CMS?

As well as being quick to deploy and easy to use, one of the biggest benefits of using Umbraco Headless CMS is the centralisation of content. A single instance of content can be published to a website, a mobile app, or any other device connected to the Internet of Things, while managing the user experience from a separate backend platform.

It relieves content creators from the worry of how their content will be displayed. It allows them more time to focus on creation rather than the management of content, which inevitably speeds up production. Separating the creation and delivery elements of traditional CMS also gives you the freedom to build a frontend framework that makes sense for you.

From a technical standpoint, Headless CMS avoids the complexity of creating relationships between code and content. Instead, it uses API calls to render content within the website’s codebase, making it much easier to maintain.

The separation of backend and frontend means there is no downtime for maintenance, so you can upgrade and customise your website without impacting performance or having the hassle of a temporary shutdown.

Umbraco Headless CMS also offers improved scalability and security by separating the responsibilities of authoring and delivery. Not only can delivery be separately scaled, but authoring can be completely hidden and inaccessible to anyone outside the company firewall.

Finally, in terms of future-proofing your approach to content creation, Headless CMS has it covered. It allows you to refresh your design without re-implementing the whole CMS; it avoids having another legacy system to maintain as we move further towards the IoT, artificial intelligence, and microservices.

Hey Peeps,

I'm an entrepreneur and web developer with a passion for coding. I absolutely love working with Umbraco CMS and appreciate the Umbraco community even more.

I've got 10 years+ .Net experience and 7 years+ experience working in the recruitment industry, both coding and marketing job websites. I wanted to use my skills to help give something back to this awesome community and so I decided to build UmbraJobs.com.

My vision & fundamentals

I want this website to be a place where Umbraco Professionals and Umbraco Partners can advertise their services but at the same time I want to filter out all the under-qualified freelancers & agencies that take up the biggest part of other job & freelancer websites. We've all worked hard to gain our Umbraco certifications, partnership status, and help build the Umbraco community to what it is today. I want to see everyone get rewarded for their efforts.

Follow me on social media

If you're an Umbraco professional, partner, employer, recruiter or a passionate Umbraco community builder then I'm more than happy to hear from you. Follow me on my social media channels and please reach out if you have any needs, want help or consultation with anything Umbraco related or just want a general chat.
