Umbraco vs Kentico

Content Management Systems (CMS), are pieces of software that are designed to assist in the creation and management of new websites. These systems help the webmaster manage resources, content types, and analytical data. Content, being a primary focus of all businesses online, plays a major role when attempting to build both your online presence and your brand. Content management systems allow you to maximise the potential of your project and provides a platform for teams to create, edit, and publish content to a website. Currently on the forefront of CMS development are Umbraco CMS and Kentico CMS, two emerging heavyweights, fighting for the championship belt. Currently, Umbraco is on top, with over 500,000 active installations, while Kentico trails very far behind with just 25,000.

Content Control

Managing content is the key reason why companies and individuals invest their time and money in a CMS platform. The efficient management and punctual processing of content are essential if you want to increase your website exposure by rising through the ranks of popular search engines, like Google.

Both Umbraco and Kentico are both diverse and flexible platforms. Kentico is particularly flexible in its allowed document types, which are fully customisable, and when it comes to the separation between content and design. But Umbraco is equally flexible, if not more so. The team behind Umbraco CMS doesn’t believe in dictating to the platform's users, so they have left it up to you. They have provided Umbraco in its standard form as a foundation, which can be customised to individual requirements.

Writing and Editing

The management and customisation of your content are important, of course. However, content and imagery are the features that contribute greatly towards the success or demise of your website. Fortunately, both Umbraco and Kentico have a response to that.

Kentico features a rigid dashboard, allowing the user to manage the individual modules and structure of their website. Alongside this, Kentico provides a WYSIWYG--What You See Is What You Get--editor, which allows you to see how your webpage will look, as you edit it.

On the other hand, Umbraco approaches content slightly differently by providing an editor that is very similar to the forever-staunch Microsoft Word. This editor can be used both online or offline, via integration to your desktop edition of Word, making it a more flexible and viable option for travelling webmasters.

SEO

Search Engine Optimisation is a necessity for companies or users who want their content to be ranked highly on search engines.

Kentico provides webmasters with a number of functionalities which are designed to improve SEO components of each webpage--titles and URLs, for example--so that you don’t have to put so much time into the tedious process of SEO yourself.

As a user of Umbraco, you have full control over every SEO-related component of the webpage, giving you an extremely easy optimisation experience.

If you’re looking for a new Content Management System that is entirely open source, backed by a professional and talented commercial company alongside a community of avid developers, Umbraco CMS is for you. On the other hand, if you’re less focused on the task ahead, and need a more regimented, limited service, Kentico CMS can provide that. Though, as everybody in the world of business and online development knows, freedom and focus are vital; Umbraco CMS, with its half-a-million active installations, numerous testimonials, and over 1,200 free plug-in packages will provide the foundation for you to exercise both.

Hey Peeps,

I'm an entrepreneur and web developer with a passion for coding. I absolutely love working with Umbraco CMS and appreciate the Umbraco community even more.

I've got 10 years+ .Net experience and 7 years+ experience working in the recruitment industry, both coding and marketing job websites. I wanted to use my skills to help give something back to this awesome community and so I decided to build UmbraJobs.com.

My vision & fundamentals

I want this website to be a place where Umbraco Professionals and Umbraco Partners can advertise their services but at the same time I want to filter out all the under-qualified freelancers & agencies that take up the biggest part of other job & freelancer websites. We've all worked hard to gain our Umbraco certifications, partnership status, and help build the Umbraco community to what it is today. I want to see everyone get rewarded for their efforts.

Follow me on social media

If you're an Umbraco professional, partner, employer, recruiter or a passionate Umbraco community builder then I'm more than happy to hear from you. Follow me on my social media channels and please reach out if you have any needs, want help or consultation with anything Umbraco related or just want a general chat.
